Cars have become so expensive these days that many people are no longer buying new cars and have turned to buying used cars. The cost difference is pretty dramatic where you can get a quality used car for at least $7,000 off the price of a new one. With the savings you get with a used car, it boggles the mind that people still buy new cars. In this article, we will go over some tips that will help ensure that you are getting a solid used car.
The first thing you want to do is look for any rust on the vehicle. And we are not just talking about visible rust as there can be lots of rust under the paint. A way to tell if there is rust hidden under the paint is how the car’s finish looks. If you see bubbling on the paint, then it’s probably rust underneath ready to pop through. If you find any rust on the vehicle keep looking because a little rust now could be a lot of rust in a year or two.
Another area to examine for rust is in the trunk of the car. This is something that no one ever looks at. Any little rust in the trunk will spread to the rest of the car. Not only will the rust spread, but it can make holes in your car causing potential water damage to anything in your trunk.
Now check out the interior of the car. If the interior of the car is clean there is a good chance that the person who owned it took good care of the vehicle. If you find stains and rips, then you can assume that not only did they not take care of the car, but they probably did not take it in for scheduled maintenance.
Now while you are inside the car check all the controls, this includes windows, door locks, heater and everything else the car has. The last thing you want to do is to buy a car in the summer and then find out the heater doesn’t work when winter hits.
The next thing to check is to see if there are any uneven wear on the tire treads. If the tires on one side of the car has less tread than the other, then there may be some alignment issues or worse. It’s possible that all you need is to align the tires or it could be something worse and may cost you thousands of dollars. So you find some uneven wear on the tire tread, look for another car.
The last thing you should do is to take the car for a test drive. What you want to do is to be sure the car’s handling on turns works properly and the brakes are solid. By taking the car for a test drive you will be able to see if there are and clunks or other issues.
